“The purpose of art is not the release of a momentary ejection of adrenaline but rather the gradual, lifelong construction of a state of wonder and serenity” – Glenn Gould, concert pianist
Pursuing high-level music instruction is a wonderful, life-affirming endeavor, whether at a young age or as an adult. Taking lessons will change the way you experience and understand music. The physical and psychological benefits of learning an instrument are well documented; it trains the ear, improves hand-eye coordination, and increases long term as well as short-term memory.
My belief is that effective musical pedagogy is not purchased through a particular book series. It is born out of musical experience, continuing education, a connection to students, and the ability to bend educational processes to a students individual learning needs.
I am uniquely qualified to teach multiple musical styles. From classical to popular styles to improvisational skills, I have an intense interest in all of what music has to offer, and am professionally active in many of these different facets of the musical world. Learning to play multiple styles, and possibly double on both basses, is a wonderful way to drastically increase your musical stock in the amateur and professional music scenes.
I have studied and played with some of the most highly trained and experienced artists in the world. I continue to study with some of the world’s most accomplished bass players to forward my own goals and continue my lifelong pursuit of musical knowledge and skill. I use this ever-expanding skill and knowledge base to help mold a pedagogical plan for each student, whether adult, teen, or child, to best suit their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles.
My job as a teacher is to help students learn how to solve musical problems and foster their creative potential on their own, not to continue teaching them in perpetuity for a paycheck. I use my professional network to help students find playing opportunities, audition and continue learning in college-level programs, and continue to learn with the highest level teachers when they have outgrown my teaching.
